Yo-Yo Ma is one of the most important and charismatic artists of our time. Like no other he knows how to communicate with the public on his music and together with them re-discovers well-known works. On the occasion of the FESTTAGE 2016 festival he will be performing with Staatskapelle Berlin conducted by Daniel Barenboim. He decided to present Antonín Dvořák's famous violoncello concerto. A wide range of moods is displayed in this work: from elegiac melodies to lively musical figures requiring virtuosic grasp. Dvořák's last orchestra work is proof that the composer was at the zenith of his creative power.

Edward Elgar's Symphony No. 2 concludes the soiree. By his own account it was the "passionate pilgrimage of the soul" which he wanted to set to music - in a large-scale work of exacting compositional pretensions.
