27 MARCH - 06 APRIL 2015

It has become an acclaimed success with the German as well as the international audience: This year the FESTTAGE festival of Staatsoper Unter den Linden will be held for the twentieth time, and for the fifth time we will be performing in the Schiller Theater. As was the case in most of our past festivals, our opera productions focus on Richard Wagner. And, as we are having a look at our figures: For the third time already, after 2005 and 2010, the concert programme has the motto »Hommage à Pierre Boulez«. On 26 March 2015 the great French composer and conductor will celebrate a big birthday – his 90th. In the past decades he has been a major factor of stimulus and inspiration in music. For us this is a welcome opportunity to give him and his works centre stage. A number of concerts will depict the many facets of his work. As many as three orchestras will honour him this year – Vienna Philharmonic, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra and Staatskapelle Berlin – all conducted by Daniel Barenboim at the Philharmonie.

Appropriately, Wagner operas will be performed: a revival of last year’s FESTTAGE »Tannhäuser« production and a new staging of »Parsifal«, a work which has a particular connection with Boulez’ career as a conductor. In 1966 he produced this very special score for the Bayreuther Festspiele festival for the first time, in 2004 again; in between there was the spectacular »once-in-a-hundred-years Ring cycle« which was shown in the Bayreuth Festival Theatre on Grüner Hügel between 1976 and 1980. Wagner and Boulez are the focus of this year’s FESTTAGE. In addition, works by Schubert, Berlioz and others will be performed by excellent artists from all over the world.
