Januar und fügte hinzu: »For those who find Bruckner’s symphonies long-winded and structurally wayward, hearing them performed by great musicians who have immersed themselves in these challenging, personal and profound works of late Germanic Romanticism was a revelation«.
Das Wall Street Journal attestierte: »Daniel Barenboim and the Staatskapelle Berlin are in the midst of a historic undertaking at Carnegie Hall« und berichtete über das Konzert mit der 4. Sinfonie: »Monday’s performance of the popular Fourth Symphony, which Bruckner dubbed ‘Romantic,’ soared impressively. Mr. Barenboim’s full-bodied approach was seamless throughout. […] Mr. Barenboim and his musicians conveyed its irrepressible joy« (24. Januar).
Die New York Classical Review lobte die Staatskapelle Berlin: »Barenboim, Staatskapelle Berlin offer a polished, deeply expressive Bruckner Second […] The extraordinary ability of the Staatskapelle Berlin, under its longtime music director Daniel Barenboim, to breathe and phrase like a single instrument would no doubt have appealed to the organist-composer Anton Bruckner« (21. Januar) sowie ferner »Barenboim leads Staatskapelle Berlin in a brilliant Bruckner Fourth […] The Staatskapelle under Barenboim sounded powerful, poised, exact, and dynamic, their performance ably capturing the size and grand ambition of the music. The ‘Romantic’ absolutely earns its moniker, a piece of soaring heights, powerful emotions, and stark contrasts […] Precise execution played a major role in
the success of this performance - even where Bruckner’s dense orchestration was at its thickest, every individual element was perfectly clear, using specific articulations to fill out the details of Barenboim’s brilliantly structured interpretation. As long as that combination of energy and tightness continues, this week at Carnegie Hall should be a memorable one, as the orchestra works its way through the rest of the Bruckner cycle« (24. Januar).
