On 12 November single tickets for Daniel Barenboim’s FESTTAGE 2017 go on sale! The program features »Die Frau ohne Schatten«, »Parsifal« and concerts starring Staatskapelle Berlin, the Wiener Philharmoniker, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Radu Lupu, Martha Argerich

Single tickets for the 22nd FESTTAGE by the Staatsoper Berlin will be available from 12 November at 10:00 am. The festival under the artistic direction of Daniel Barenboim will take place from 7 – 16 April 2017 in the Staatsoper im Schiller Theater and in the Philharmonie Berlin.

Since its foundation in 1996 the FESTTAGE festival has been attracting a large number of opera and music lovers from all over the world to Berlin. Next year, the public can look forward to five world-class opera performances and four concerts. In addition to the Staatskapelle Berlin, the Wiener Philharmoniker will be performing; the guest soloists invited are Anne-Sophie Mutter, Radu Lupu and Martha Argerich. Daniel Barenboim will be conducting Wagner's opera »Parsifal« in Staatsoper im Schiller Theater and three symphony concerts in the Philharmonie. Furthermore he will appear as soloist in a duo recital with Martha Argerich.

Two major musical theatre works from the late 19th and early 20th centuries will be heard on the stage of the Schiller Theater, both based on mythical narratives. The FESTTAGE opera premiere will be Richard Strauss’ »Die Frau ohne Schatten« on 9 April in the production by Claus Guth. The conductor of Staatskapelle Berlin will be the honorary conductor of the orchestra, Zubin Mehta – Daniel Barenboim’s long-term friend and musical companion. The singers will be, among others, Camilla Nylund, Iréne Theorin, Michaela Schuster, Wolfgang Koch, Roman Trekel and Staatsopernchor. Further performances: 13 and 16 April 2017.

Richard Wagner's »Parsifal« in the highly acclaimed production by Dmitri Tcherniakov will be revived on 8 and 14 April – with Andreas Schager singing the title role and, among others, Anna Larsson (Kundry),René Pape (Gurnemanz), Lauri Vasar (Amfortas), Tómas Tómasson (Klingsor) and Matthias Hölle (Titurel). Thus the long and revered Wagner tradition in Berliner Staatsoper, which has been getting new impulses since the very start of the FESTTAGE festival, will be continued next year. Simultaneously it will be highlighted by being contrasted to the exceptional work by the Wagner enthusiast Richard Strauss.

The FESTTAGE will be opened on 7 April 2017 by the Wiener Philharmoniker, who follow the invitation to Berlin for the fourth time running. They will be performing a Mozart/Schönberg program. The next performances will be two concerts of Staatskapelle Berlin with Anne-Sophie Mutter (11 April) and Radu Lupu (12 April) as the soloists. Anne-Sophie Mutter will be interpreting Ludwig van Beethoven's violin concerto – a true highlight of the repertoire –, along with Claude Debussy's »La Mer« and Alban Berg's »Drei Orchesterstücke op. 6«.
Radu Lupu will perform Ludwig van Beethoven's piano concerto No. 5. The concert will be covering the period from Beethoven to Brahms and further to Schönberg – from the First Viennese School to the Viennese Modern Age. The last concert of the FESTTAGE will be a recital for two of the best-known pianists worldwide, Martha Argerich and Daniel Barenboim, on 15 April. Whereas the symphony concert on 12 April features Johannes Brahms’ »Haydn-Variationen« op. 56 for orchestra as well as Arnold Schönberg's »Fünf Orchesterstücke« op. 16, the two pianists will be performing these very works in adaptations for two pianos, written by Brahms himself and by the Schönberg disciple Anton Webern. The program of the duo recital will be completed by Franz Liszt's virtuosic »Concerto pathétique« and his highly original Mozart homage »Réminiscences de Don Juan«.
