The FESTTAGE festival will be returning to its traditional location next year. Where it was brought into being in 1996 by Daniel Barenboim, in the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in the centre of Berlin, it again finds its place after a seven-year stint in the Schiller Theater. The extraordinary musical theatre works by two major 19th century composers will be performed in the fully renovated opera house: Verdi’s Falstaff and Wagner’s Parsifal, one a new production, the other restaged. This performance will be accompanied by three concerts in the Philharmonie which — as the second venue for the FESTTAGE — has been attracting theatergoers from Berlin, Germany, Europe and throughout the world. Mahler and Debussy are two composers who will be featured. Born about half a century after Wagner and Verdi, they both paved the way for music in modern times, each one in his individual way. An array of outstanding artists will give this FESTTAGE an especially impressive air and will lend glamour to the festivities: Pianist Martha Argerich will be performing two concerts, the Wiener Philharmoniker will return to the stage, and this already remarkable line-up will be accompanied by performances from excellent singers like Nina Stemme, Maria Agresta, Nadine Sierra, Anna Prohaska, Marianne Crebassa, Michael Volle, Simone Piazzola, Andreas Schager and René Pape. The FESTTAGE will be decisively resting — as has been the case for more than 20 years — on the Staatsopernchor, the Staatskapelle Berlin and, of course, Daniel Barenboim who will be present in all performances — either as a conductor or as a pianist. Welcome to the 2018 FESTTAGE, making its much-anticipated return in Berlin during the Easter holiday!
