A Sunday for the State Opera at Dussmann, the KulturKaufhaus: The 20th edition is dedicated to the Kinderopernhaus Berlin

On Sunday, October 11, 2026, Dussmann’s KulturKaufhaus, in collaboration with the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, will host the 20th annual “Sunday for the Staatsoper.” This year’s anniversary celebration will be dedicated to the Kinderopernhaus Berlin, which has been an integral part of the Staatsoper’s work with young audiences for more than 15 years.

The joint Sunday event for the State Opera will be opened by State Opera Artistic Director Elisabeth Sobotka. The musical program will be presented by Lindenbrass (the brass ensemble of the Staatskapelle Berlin), musicians from the Orchestra Academy of the Staatskapelle Berlin, and singers from the International Opera Studio.  The program will include works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Antonín Dvořák, Richard Wagner, Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini, and Johann Strauss, among others.

A panel discussion featuring director Julia Rohrbeck, along with children and parents, will also provide insights into the work of the Berlin Children’s Opera House, complemented by film clips showcasing the opera house’s work.

Opera by Children, for Children: The Kinderopernhaus Berlin gives children ages 8 to 13 the opportunity to explore the art form of opera in depth over a three-year period and to help shape it themselves. Under professional guidance, they develop their musical and theatrical skills and, in their third year, stage their own final production at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. In the process, the children don’t just experience opera as an audience; they become singers, actors, and co-creators themselves. In addition to the Kinderopernhaus Unter den Linden, the project is active in five other Berlin districts and reaches several hundred children each season. For many of them, this provides a first and formative introduction to the art form of opera.

The special significance of this work was also recognized this year with an award: In July 2026, Regina Lux-Hahn, the founder of the Kinderopernhaus Berlin, was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for her many years of dedication.

As in previous years, Dussmann is supporting the KulturKaufhaus and, through this event, the work of the State Opera: The day’s proceeds will be donated to the Association of Friends and Supporters of the State Opera Unter den Linden and will benefit the work of the Berlin Children’s Opera House this year. In addition, donations for the work of the Berlin Children’s Opera House will be collected during the event. There will also once again be exclusive ticket offers on site for selected events at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden.
