Nach einer Ausbildung an der Bayerischen Staatsoper in München studierte sie Theaterwissenschaft an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München und assistierte zunächst Anna Viebrock, Axel Manthey und Johannes Grützke.Mittlerweile arbeitet sie als freie Bühnen- und Kostümbildnerin im Bereich Schauspiel und Oper mit Regisseur:innen wie Jossi Wieler und Sergio Morabito, Stephan Kimmig, Johan Simons, Christoph Marthaler, Calixto Bieito und Andrea Moses. Auch Angabe der Person am Deutschen Theater Berlin in der Regie von Jossi Wieler wurde 2023 mit dem Nestroy-Preis als beste Aufführung im deutschsprachigen Raum ausgezeichnet.Anja Rabes war Gastdozentin der Szenografie-Klasse an der Staatlichen Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe sowie Dozentin an der Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg.
