Abonnementkonzert III

The 200th anniversary of the Staatsopernchor calls for an appropriately festive piece to mark the occasion. In the 1880s, when Anton Bruckner was already breaking new ground with his grand symphonies, he set out to compose a monumentally melodious »Te Deum« for soloists, chorus and orchestra. He and Franz Schubert were united by an elective affinity of sorts, and the musical expression of the two composers is indeed kindred. Schubert’s haunting »Gesang der Geister über den Wassern« (Song of the Spirits over the Waters), set to profound lyrics by Goethe, places the spotlight once again on the Staatsopernchor.
