There are many works that take up the theme of rivers and seas, and reflect upon them musically. Schumann’s Symphony No. 3, composed in Düsseldorf in 1850 and unambiguously called the »Rheinische«, is related to Elgar’s »Sea Pictures«, a cycle of five orchestral songs written in 1899, and Debussy’s »La Mer«, a three-part series of »symphonic sketches« from the years shortly after 1900.
