Abonnementkonzert IV

Beginning in 1840, Robert Schumann systematically explored and mastered various musical genres in turn: after trying his hand at Lieder, symphonies and chamber music, in 1843 he turned his attention to the oratorio. Works of this type are specifically intended for the concert hall rather than the church, and »Paradise and the Peri« is no exception. This oratorio summons us to distant climes, where deeply human emotions and behaviour encounter a higher intellectual plane, linking the earthly and heavenly spheres.
