Franz Liszt’s symphonic poems opened a new chapter in music history and left a lasting legacy. One of them explores the myth of Orpheus, a singer renowned for working miracles with his music. Concurrently, near the midpoint of the nineteenth century, Robert Schumann was composing his violin concerto, which would first be performed decades later. The five-movement Concerto for Orchestra by Liszt’s fellow Hungarian Béla Bartók combines an unusual diversity of colours and forms.
