We are pleased to announce the revival of the American Friends of the Berlin Staatsoper (»AFBS«), originally founded in 1994 to promote cross-Atlantic cultural ties between the Berlin Staatsoper, the Staatskapelle Berlin and its many admirers and sponsors in the USA. AFBS works closely with the Freunde und Förderer (Friends and Supporters) of the Berlin Staatsoper.
Since its founding, AFBS has sponsored song recitals, concerts and lectures of the Berlin Staatsoper across the United States. Its members and patrons have traveled to Berlin for operas, concerts and lectures while also visiting Berlin’s fabulous museums and wondrous historical sites.
The American Friends of the Berlin Staatsoper receive each year’s program and their ticket requests are handled with priority and preference. They receive invitations to distinctive events in Berlin especially during the yearly music festival, the »FESTTAGE«. Special performances and fundraising events are held in New York with Staatsoper and Staatskapelle artists.

The Friends and Supporters at FEDORA
Our association was founded by Hans-Dietrich Genscher and Daniel Barenboim in order to support the Staatsoper’s artistic development nationally and internationally and thus contribute to international understanding. With respect to this idea, our association in October 2015 became a member of FEDORA, the European circle of philanthropists of Opera and Ballet.
We are happy about one further step of our association on its way to an international network and about the new contacts to other Friends’ associations of outstanding European opera houses and we are looking forward to common projects.
We cordially thank Christian Freiherr von Weber, member of our board of curators, who enables the FEDORA-membership by his generous donation and represents our association.
Our members of the status »Donor« and »Patron«can benefit from the additional events offered by FEDORA.
About FEDORA
FEDORA was created in Paris early in 2014 as a European network of private philanthropy with the purpose of contributing to the future of opera and ballet and hereby promoting the European idea. By means of an annual prize-giving, international new opera productions and emerging artists are supported. FEDORA currently federates over 40 organizational members of outstanding European Opera Houses in 13 countries and increases steadily. Jérôme-François Zieseniss, president of the Circolo La Fenice in Venice, is FEDORA’s president.
In order to promote international exchange, the involved houses host extraordinary events and meetings around excellent opera performances for members of FEDORA. Also at the annual prize giving ceremony, interesting contacts with the international guests can be established.
Since 2017, FEDORA has been building a platform – funded by Creative Europe – to make innovative and border-crossing projects in the spheres of opera and ballet more visible.
Thanks to our cooperation with »Transnational Giving Europe« (TGE), membership fees and donations to the »Freunde und Förderer der Staatsoper« can now be donated tax-efficiently from the following European countries: Belgium, France, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland.
»Transnational Giving Europe« is a Europe-wide network of prestigious philanthropic foundations and institutions which allows tax-effective cross-border giving. The process, which is approved by fiscal authorities and regularly controlled, enables donors, resident in one of the participating countries, to financially support non-profit organizations in other Member States, while benefiting directly from the tax advantages provided for in the legislation of their country of residence.
We will be happy to inform you about the possibilities to support the Staatsoper via »Transnational Giving Europe«.
