Special concert Musik aus fernen Rundfunktagen

In a special concert, the Staatskapelle Berlin and its General Music Director Christian Thielemann devote themselves to an unusual repertoire: the sounds of those decades when people sat eagerly in front of the radio and listened to broadcasts from the airwaves. The special concert Musik aus fernen Rundfunktagen embarks on a journey of discovery into a time when symphonic sonority, jazz elements and dance rhythms were combined in a special way. Great symphonies and instrumental concertos, which otherwise dominate the Staatskapelle's programmes on concert stages in Berlin and around the world, deliberately take a back seat here in favour of music of high artistic quality, intended for the concert hall as well as the salon or dance floor – sophisticated light music at its best.

The programme includes Dmitri Shostakovich's Suite for Variety Orchestra, Nico Dostal's Spanish Sketches for Orchestra, Ernst Fischer's Ferientage – Suite for Orchestra and Eduard Künneke's Dance Suite for Orchestra and Jazz Band. Together, these works from the 1920s to the 1950s paint a multifaceted picture of an era in which radio, as a new medium, brought musical diversity into living rooms and shaped a new way of listening.

Christian Thielemann and the Staatskapelle Berlin are thus continuing on from the concerts at the turn of the year 2024/25, which already featured music from theatre and film of the interwar period, a repertoire away from the great symphonic cycles with different stylistic characteristics and tonal peculiarities.
