“Since Bach’s Mass in B minor and Beethoven’s Missa solemnis, nothing has been written in this field that can stand alongside Brahms’ Deutsches Requiem” wrote the influential music writer Eduard Hanslick. Brahms created a work that transcends all denominational boundaries and expresses feelings of suffering and grief, consolation and hope in a highly impressive manner, with a carefully considered selection of texts and a particularly sensitive approach to setting them to music. It is music for Good Friday that reflects on this day and at the same time points beyond it.
