Symposion 450 Jahre Staatskapelle Berlin

For the third time, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden is organising an international symposium with an eye to the upcoming 450-year anniversary of the Staatskapelle. The symposium will begin by illuminating the early stages of the Kapelle’s history and the era of Frederick the Great, which was decisive in the ensemble’s development, before going on to focus on the »long 19th century«. The founding of the series of symphony concerts which have taken place continuously since 1842 falls into this era, as does the engagement of highly influential artistic personalities such as Gaspare Spontini, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Giacomo Meyerbeer, Felix von Weingartner and Richard Strauss. The story of the Royal Prussian Court Orchestra – which has been called the Staatskapelle Berlin since 1919 – will be explored in the context of the overall political, social and cultural history of the city, Prussia and the German Empire.
