In his second season as General music director, Christian Thielemann will take on the musical direction of key performances in the 2025/26 programme at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. Conducting the Staatskapelle Berlin, the GMD will open the new season's opera programme with two cycles of Richard Wagner's tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen. He will also conduct Wozzeck. Alban Berg's opera will return to the stage of the Staatsoper exactly 100 years after its premiere, starting on 14 December 2025, in Andrea Breth's 2011 production. During the 2026 festive season, Christian Thielmann will conduct Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier as well as the Konzert zum Karfreitag with Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem, followed by the revival of Die schweigsame Frau in May 2026.
The rest of the concert programme for the new season also bears the hallmark of the General Music Director. In addition to three symphony concerts with the Staatskapelle Berlin, Christian Thielemann will also conduct the New Year's concert, the special concert ‘Music from Distant Radio Days’ and, for the third time in a row, the open-air concert at ‘Staatsoper für alle’ on 24 May 2026 at Bebelplatz. The programme will feature music by Beethoven, Brahms, Liszt, Strauss, Lehár and others.
