Since the 1990s, performances from the diverse repertoire of Baroque opera with ensembles that specialize in the playing style of the period have been part of the Staatsoper’s profile.
At the Barocktage 2026, the range of performances will stretch from works from the very first decades of the opera as a genre to a central work from over one hundred years later, the end of the Baroque period. As in the very first operas, the mythical figure of the singer Orpheus is central to Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice. Before mezzo soprano Cecilia Bartoli returns to the Staatsoper in this title role, tenor Rolando Villazón will explore the musical facets of the figure since Claudio Monteverdi in a concert. Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea and Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas will return once more to the stage with Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, and the ensemble with also perform a concert. Christina Pluhar and her ensemble L’Arpeggiata will also perform several times, particularly in Stefan Herheim’s new production of Francesco Cavalli’s fascinating opera La Calisto.
