Traditional in form, but noticeably experimental in terms of harmony and sound, it prefigured the »modern« Prokofiev of the coming years. With his »Symphonic Dances«, Rachmaninoff’s brilliant three-movement orchestral work in late Romantic style from 1940, the composer was once again feted on the international music scene. He also considered this last composition his best, which is hardly surprising given its inventiveness and vibrant sound. [...]

[...] André Campras’ opera »Tancrède«, which was written in 1701 with a libretto by Antoine Danchet, tells the story of love and war. Based on the »Selva di Saron« episode from Torquato Tasso’s Renaissance epic »La Gerusalemme liberata«, the figure of the Muslim princess Clorinda, who falls in love with the Christian King Tankred (her enemy and later murderer) appears as a complex character study in Danchet’s libretto, in which the transformation from desperate lover to decisive warrior is clearly articulated. For her new music theatre piece, the Italian composer Lucia Ronchetti has redefined the baroque libretto and condensed it into an intense monologue. Clorinda becomes the narrator and witness of her own tragedy – an irreconcilable conflict between rivalry and desire. The composition itself also reveals an impressive combination of baroque and modern elements of style, which is an important aspect of Ronchetti’s musical expression. [...]

    Il barbiere di Siviglia

    Next dates:

    No upcoming dates.

[...] The wealthy Count Almaviva has won the heart of the beautiful Rosina under the pseudonym 'Lindoro'. But Rosina’s jealous guardian Dr Bartolo wishes to marry his ward himself and so tries to keep her suitors away. The 23-year-old Rossini composed 'Il barbiere di Siviglia' in just three weeks. Witty, fiery and vibrant, it is a masterpiece of Italian opera buffa, in which, as is so often the case, the old man in disguise hoodwinks everyone. (...) The music teacher Basilio turns up to warn his friend Bartolo that Almaviva is in the city. He argues that there is only one way to get rid of the count: slander. Rosina of course, recognizes Alonso as her Lindoro, and a music lesson is improvised to keep up the pretence. Bartolo, naturally, finds modern music abominable. Figaro manages to steal the key to the balcony door from Bartolo. (...) “Every now and then, someone somewhere in the world succeeds in staging a work that is so perfectly realised and so well interpreted that it neither becomes outdated nor boring over the years. Ruth Berghaus achieved this miracle of ingenious timelessness in 1968 with Gioacchino Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Staatsoper. The humour, grace and incredible musicality of that performance survived generations of singers, conductors, assistants and even the fall of the Berlin Wall.” [...]

With compelling dramaturgy and pronounced realism, Puccini created one of his tersest and most dramatic works – a milestone in the history of opera.
